The winegrowing in Höngg has a tradition that has not been developed in thousands of years. Finds from antiquity suggest that the Romans already used vines here. In 1869 Höngg was the third largest vine community in the canton of Zurich. After the rages of phylloxera, the area under vines sank to a few hectares, which during the war were finally cleared completely. In 1969, the town built the distinctive Chillesteig vineyard, below the church Höngg which was newly constructed. It was the crowning glory of a project, in which Heinrich Zweifel (1904 - 1987) played a decisive role for twelve years.
